Terms of use
The licence agreement for Hearthtold, including Hearthtold Plus and how its subscription renews and can be cancelled.
Last updated: 25 October 2026
These terms are the licence agreement for Hearthtold, the iPhone app for recording a parent’s or grandparent’s stories and making them into a book. By downloading or using Hearthtold you agree to them. They are also the end user licence agreement shown on Hearthtold’s App Store page.
1. The agreement
This agreement is between you and Mirentha Ltd only, and not Apple. Mirentha Ltd, not Apple, is solely responsible for Hearthtold and its content. Mirentha Ltd is a company incorporated in England and Wales (company number 17207914), with its registered office at 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ. In these terms “Mirentha”, “we” and “us” mean Mirentha Ltd, and “you” means the person using Hearthtold.
2. Your licence
We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use Hearthtold on any Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions (https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/), except that Hearthtold may also be used by other accounts associated with you through Family Sharing or volume purchasing. Hearthtold Plus, the subscription, isn’t shared through Family Sharing. You may not copy, modify, rent, lend or redistribute the app, or try to extract its source code, except where the law allows it.
3. Using Hearthtold
Hearthtold is for personal and family use. You are responsible for getting the storyteller’s agreement before recording. Transcripts and chapters are made by software on your iPhone, may contain mistakes, and are not a word-for-word record. The words belong to the person who spoke them; Hearthtold claims no rights in anything you record or make.
- Tell the storyteller what you are doing, that they can stop at any time, and that their stories may become a book for the family. If they can’t follow what you’re asking or can’t give you a clear yes, don’t record. Each conversation starts with their spoken yes, which Hearthtold keeps with the recording.
- Follow the law where you are on recording conversations, and respect the privacy of the people the stories mention. Hearthtold lists the people named in a book so you can check each one is happy with what is said, especially anyone living.
- Chapters, headings and follow-up questions are suggestions made by software. Listen to each chapter and check it before it goes in the book; Hearthtold marks words you change and only puts chapters you have ticked “Listened and checked” in the book.
- A family book is fine. If you plan to sell copies, ask the storyteller or their estate first.
- Your recordings and everything you make are kept on your iPhone and, if you use it, in your own iCloud Drive. We never receive them and can’t recover them for you. Keep a copy: Save everything makes one archive per storyteller, free.
4. Purchases
Hearthtold is free to download. Free of charge, you can record and write out every conversation, with no limit; have chapters made from your first conversation (the first conversation, on any storyteller, whose chapter-making finishes); split any conversation into chapters by hand; correct, play back and share recordings and transcripts; keep the iCloud Drive copy; use Save everything; and use Recently Deleted.
Hearthtold Plus is an auto-renewing subscription in two plans:
- Plus Monthly: £2.99 a month.
- Plus Annual: £19.99 a year.
These are the UK prices. The App Store shows you the price in your own currency before you confirm a purchase. Plus adds chapters made for you from every conversation, follow-up questions as you talk, and exporting the book as a print-ready PDF. Plus has no free trial.
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
- Your subscription renews automatically unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for the renewal, at the plan’s price (£2.99 a month or £19.99 a year in the UK), within the 24 hours before the current period ends.
- You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple Account settings: on your iPhone, Settings › your name › Subscriptions, or in Hearthtold, Settings › Hearthtold Plus › Manage subscription.
- If a free trial is ever offered, any unused part of it ends when you buy a subscription.
- Restore Purchases is in Hearthtold’s Settings and on the Plus screen.
- Refunds are handled by Apple under its own policy. You can ask for one at https://reportaproblem.apple.com.
If your subscription ends, nothing is deleted or hidden: everything you have recorded and made stays, chapters already made can still be edited and checked, and the book of chapters already made can still be exported. Chapters made for you from new conversations, and follow-up questions, stop until you subscribe again.
Chapters made for you and follow-up questions use Apple Intelligence, on an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence switched on, in a language it supports. On an iPhone that can’t run Apple Intelligence, Plus isn’t offered and exporting the book is free. While Apple Intelligence is switched off or still getting ready, Plus isn’t offered, and without Plus the book can’t be exported until it is.
5. Maintenance and support
Mirentha alone is responsible for providing maintenance and support services for Hearthtold, as described on its support page (https://mirentha.com/apps/hearthtold/support/) or as required by applicable law. Apple has no obligation whatsoever to furnish any maintenance and support services with respect to Hearthtold.
6. Warranty
Mirentha is solely responsible for any product warranties, whether express or implied by law, to the extent not effectively disclaimed. In the event of any failure of Hearthtold to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) for Hearthtold to you. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Apple will have no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to Hearthtold, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses attributable to any failure to conform to any warranty are Mirentha’s responsibility. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer in the UK, including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
7. Product claims
Mirentha, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claims by you or any third party relating to Hearthtold or your possession and use of it, including: (i) product liability claims; (ii) any claim that Hearthtold fails to conform to any applicable legal or regulatory requirement; and (iii) claims arising under consumer protection, privacy or similar legislation.
8. Intellectual property
Hearthtold, its design, its questions and its code belong to Mirentha or its licensors. The printed book’s typeface, EB Garamond, is used under the SIL Open Font License. In the event of any third-party claim that Hearthtold or your possession and use of it infringes that third party’s intellectual property rights, Mirentha, not Apple, will be solely responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement and discharge of any such intellectual property infringement claim.
9. Legal compliance
You represent and warrant that (i) you are not located in a country that is subject to a U.S. Government embargo, or that has been designated by the U.S. Government as a “terrorist supporting” country; and (ii) you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
10. Third-party terms
You must comply with applicable third-party terms of agreement when using Hearthtold, such as your wireless data service agreement and Apple’s terms for iCloud.
11. Third-party beneficiary
Apple and Apple’s subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this agreement. On your acceptance of these terms, Apple will have the right (and will be deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
12. Our liability to you
We make Hearthtold with care, but we can’t promise it will always be available or free of faults, that a transcript or chapter will be accurate, or that a recording can be recovered if your iPhone, your iCloud Drive copy and any archive you saved are all lost. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from your use of Hearthtold. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited under the laws of England and Wales, and nothing affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your own courts.
