PackcastPacking lists for iPhone, by Mirentha

Packcast privacy policy

What Packcast keeps on your iPhone and in your own iCloud, and what it sends to Apple to find places and fetch the weather. Mirentha receives none of it, apart from crash reports Apple may pass on if you've chosen to share them.

Who we are

Packcast is made by Mirentha Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17207914), whose registered office is at 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ. In this policy "Mirentha", "we" and "us" mean Mirentha Ltd. For anything about your privacy, write to [email protected].

This policy covers the Packcast app for iPhone. Visits to this website are covered by Mirentha's website privacy policy.

The short version

  • Packcast has no account, and no ads, analytics or tracking. Mirentha receives nothing about you or your trips, apart from the crash reports Apple may pass on if you've chosen to share them.
  • Your trips, lists, templates and what you've told it you didn't use are kept on your iPhone and, if you use iCloud, in your own iCloud, which Mirentha can't read.
  • To find a town and fetch its weather, what you type into place search, and each stop's location with a range of dates, are sent to Apple.
  • The app never asks for or reads your own location.
  • Purchases are handled by Apple.

What Packcast keeps, and where

Your trips and lists

To build your lists and keep them, Packcast stores:

  • Trips: the name, whether it's leisure or business, carry-on only or a checked bag, whether there's laundry, the activities you picked, the template it started from, whether you've answered or put off What didn't you use?, and when you created it.
  • Stops: each place's name as you picked or typed it, its location (latitude and longitude) and time zone, the dates, and the daily weather fetched for it.
  • List items: each item's name, category and quantity, whether it's packed, to buy or removed, why it's on the list, whether it's marked New, Maybe not needed now or Usually unused, and your answers to What didn't you use?
  • Templates you've saved, and My items with the rules you gave them.
  • What it has learnt: for each item, how many trips you didn't use it on, how many you did, and how often you took too many. An item you added to a trip with + is counted under its name, and one from My items under an internal code. Later lists learn from it.

All of this is kept in the app's storage on your iPhone. If you're signed in to iCloud, it is also kept in your iCloud private database and synced between your devices by Apple's CloudKit. That copy is stored by Apple under your Apple Account; Mirentha can't see or read it. If you're not signed in to iCloud, or iCloud is restricted, all of this is kept on your iPhone only. Signing out of iCloud, or turning iCloud off for Packcast, removes it from the iPhone; what has synced stays in your iCloud until you delete it there.

Apple describes how it protects iCloud data in its iCloud data security overview.

Settings on your iPhone

Whether the packing reminder is on and how many days before a trip it comes, the temperature unit, whether your first list has been built, and whether this iPhone has asked for permission to send notifications. For Apple's rating prompt it also keeps how many trips' lists you have packed completely before the trip ended, an internal code for the last trip it counted (so the same trip isn't counted twice in a row; the code isn't the trip's name), and the version of the app that last asked Apple to show the prompt, so that Packcast asks no more than once a version, and not until you've packed a second trip in full. These stay on the iPhone and aren't synced. Apple decides whether the prompt appears, and a rating you give goes to the App Store; Packcast isn't told what you gave.

What leaves your iPhone, and why

  • Weather (Apple Weather): to fetch a stop's daily weather, Packcast sends Apple's WeatherKit the stop's latitude and longitude and a range of dates: the stop's own dates for days within the next ten, and otherwise the same dates in up to three recent years in which they have already passed (back to August 2021). Nothing else about your trip is sent with it.
  • Places (Apple Maps): when you search for a town, what you type (as you type it) and the result you pick are sent to Apple's MapKit to find the place, its location and its time zone.
  • The Apple Weather mark: each time the app starts, it asks WeatherKit for the Apple Weather mark, and it loads the mark's image from Apple where it shows it, because WeatherKit asks apps to show it. Tapping the mark opens Apple's weather attribution page.
  • iCloud: your trips sync through your own iCloud private database, as described above. iCloud sends the app silent notifications to say that synced data has changed; they carry no message for you.
  • The App Store: to buy, restore and check Packcast Plus.

Apple handles these requests under the Apple Privacy Policy, and Mirentha doesn't receive them. Apple is the only third party that receives any of this data. We confirm that Apple gives it the same or equal protection as this policy describes, under the Apple Privacy Policy. Packcast uses no third-party services, frameworks or SDKs besides Apple's own.

Reminders

The packing reminder is a notification Packcast schedules on your iPhone, at 18:00 a number of days before a trip's first stop (two by default). It isn't sent from a server. It shows the trip's name and its first stop, and iOS keeps it on your iPhone until it appears, so it can show on your Lock Screen. With the reminder on, Packcast asks for permission after you create your first trip on an iPhone. It also asks when you tap Allow Notifications in its Settings, or when you turn the reminder on there while you have a trip and it hasn't asked yet. You can turn the reminder off in the app's Settings, or turn notifications off in Settings › Notifications › Packcast.

Sharing and exporting

When you share a list as plain text, or export your trips as a spreadsheet (a CSV file), it goes only where you choose to send or save it. Neither contains any weather.

Purchases

Packcast Plus is bought through the App Store. Apple handles the payment, and Mirentha never sees your payment details. We receive only Apple's aggregated sales reports.

Crash reports

Packcast contains no analytics or crash reporting of its own. If you've chosen to share analytics with app developers (Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements), Apple may share crash reports and usage statistics with us. Apple says this information is aggregated or in a form that doesn't personally identify you. Apple decides how long these reports are kept, and we use them only to find and fix problems in Packcast. You can turn sharing off in that setting at any time.

What Mirentha does with your data

Nothing: Mirentha doesn't receive or process any personal data from Packcast, so there is no lawful basis to set out for the app. If you write to us, with the support form or by email, we use your message and email address only to reply, as our website privacy policy describes.

Keeping and deleting your data

Your data stays until you delete it. Nothing is deleted when a subscription ends.

  • A trip: swipe it on Trips (for the trip at the top, touch and hold its card), or choose Delete trip from its menu. Its list and its reminder go with it, on this iPhone and, through iCloud, on your other devices.
  • Templates and My items: swipe a template to the left in Templates, or an item in Settings › My items, and confirm.
  • What it has learnt: deleting trips doesn't remove the counts of what you did and didn't use, or the names of items you added to a trip with + that they're kept under, and the app has no setting that removes them. To remove them, delete the app and its iCloud data.
  • Everything on this iPhone: delete the app.
  • The iCloud copy: open the Settings app, tap your name, then iCloud, then Storage (or Manage Account Storage), then Packcast, then Delete Data from iCloud.

Changing permissions

Notifications: Settings › Notifications › Packcast. iCloud sync: open the Settings app, tap your name, then iCloud, then See All next to Saved to iCloud, and turn Packcast off. Packcast's data then leaves that iPhone; what has synced stays in your iCloud and comes back if you turn it on again. Export your trips first (Settings › Export all trips) if you want a copy of your own. Packcast asks for no other permissions.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict, object to the processing of, and move personal data held about you. Mirentha holds no personal data from Packcast, so there is normally nothing for us to give you or delete, but you can write to [email protected] about any of these rights. If you're unhappy, tell us first so we can try to put it right; you can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.

Children

Packcast isn't aimed at children under 13, and it collects nothing from anyone, children included.

Changes to this policy

If Packcast changes what it does with data, we'll update this policy before that version reaches the App Store, and change the date at the top.
