Questions
Why is something on my list?
Most items a rule adds say why under their name. Weather items name the weather and the stop, after a small symbol for the first weather they name: a rain cloud for rain, a snow cloud for snow, a sun for warm weather and so on ("Rain likely in Porto", "Mild in Porto, warm in Lisbon"). Others name the activity ("For the beach"), the length of the trip ("3 nights or more") or the luggage ("Carry-on only"). Items under Usually unused say how often you didn't use them instead ("Not used on 2 of 3 trips"). Items with no line under them either go on every trip or every trip with a night away (like a toothbrush), or are ones you added yourself. To take an item off the list of a trip that isn't over yet, swipe it to the left or choose Remove from list from its menu; it won't come back to that trip.
Where does the weather come from?
From Apple Weather. For days within the next ten, Packcast uses the forecast at each stop. Further ahead, or for days already past, it uses typical weather: the average of the same dates over the latest three years (the history starts in August 2021). At the top of a trip, its poster gives each stop one line of weather: the lows and highs, how warm it is and the days rain or snow is likely ("13–20°C · mild, rain likely Thu and Fri"). Under the stops, after the Apple Weather mark, it says where the weather came from: "forecast", "typical for these dates" with the years, or "forecast, then typical for these dates". Weather covers the first 30 days of each stop.
"No weather — place not found" means the stop has no location to fetch weather for: it was kept as you typed it, or Apple Maps couldn't locate the place you picked. Edit the trip and choose the place from the search results. If the weather couldn't be fetched, the list is built without it; pull down on the list to try again.
What do New and "Maybe not needed now" mean?
Once a day, when you open Packcast before a trip starts, it checks the forecast again for stops within the next ten days. Anything the new weather needs is added marked New, until you tick it. Anything the weather no longer calls for says "Maybe not needed now": tap Remove, or keep it. Packcast never deletes an item by itself.
What does "What didn't you use?" do?
The first time you open a trip after it's over, if you ticked anything on it, Packcast asks what you didn't use. Tap anything that stayed in the bag, and under Took too many anything the list had you pack more of than you needed, then tap Save, or Not now to leave it. Something you didn't use on two trips (and more often than you used it) moves under Usually unused at the end of later lists, unticked. Took too many packs one fewer next time. You can answer again from the trip's menu.
How do I add my own things?
For one trip that isn't over yet, tap + on the trip and add the item. For every future list, go to Settings › My items and add it with a rule: every trip, or only for some activities or weather, with a quantity or one per night.
When does the reminder come?
At 18:00, two days before the first stop of each trip (if that time is still to come), saying "Start packing for" the first place. Change the number of days (one to seven) or turn it off in the app's Settings › Reminder. It needs notifications to be allowed: if they're off, turn them on in Settings › Notifications › Packcast.
How do templates and Pack again work?
Both are part of Packcast Plus. From a trip's menu, Save as template keeps its list, activities and luggage; start a new trip from it with Start from, at the top of New trip, or by tapping it in Templates. On a past trip's menu, Pack again starts a new trip with the same places, activities and list; you add the dates, and the weather is checked for them.
How does sync work?
Your trips, templates and My items sync through your own iCloud, on any iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account. The app's Settings shows whether iCloud sync is on. If you're not signed in to iCloud, trips are kept on the iPhone only. Signing out of iCloud, or turning iCloud off for Packcast, removes Packcast's data from that iPhone; what has synced stays in your iCloud and comes back when you sign in again.
How do I restore Packcast Plus?
In the app, go to Settings › Plan › Restore purchases, signed in with the Apple Account you subscribed with.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
In the app, Settings › Plan › Manage subscription, which appears once you've subscribed. Or on your iPhone, Settings › your name › Subscriptions › Packcast Plus. Cancel at least 24 hours before it renews. If Plus ends, nothing is deleted: your trips, templates and exports stay, and the free plan's limits apply again.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple. Ask for one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
How do I share a list or export my trips?
From a trip's menu, Share list sends it as a plain-text checklist. Settings › Export all trips saves a spreadsheet (a CSV file) of every trip and item, for Numbers or Excel.
How do I delete my data?
Swipe a trip on Trips (for the trip at the top, touch and hold its card), or choose Delete trip from its menu, to delete it with its list and reminder. Swipe a template to the left in Templates, or an item in Settings › My items, to delete it. Deleting the app removes everything on the iPhone. To remove the copy in iCloud, open the Settings app, tap your name, then iCloud, Storage (or Manage Account Storage), Packcast, and Delete Data from iCloud. Deleting trips doesn't remove what Packcast has learnt about what you didn't use; deleting the app and its iCloud data does. The privacy policy has the detail.
Limits worth knowing
- A trip can have up to five stops.
- Weather covers the first 30 days of each stop, and trips over 60 nights use 60-night quantities.
- A trip is for one traveller (the Baby activity adds a baby's things).
- Without Packcast Plus, you can plan one trip at a time; finished trips stay, to read, share or delete.
